Unit 1 Projects:
Stamp
Plan:
-
Make a handle-style shape with a flat bottom using a coil
-
Carve initials backward into my stamp with needle and signing tools
-
Fire!

Something that went well while making my stamp was forming the handle itself, I rolled a large coil and used that. However, making the flat edge to carve into was harder. I had a hard time finding a surface to make the edge completely flat and when I carved my initials it curved the edges a bit. If I were to do this again I would instead make a pendant to score and slip onto the handle portion to make sure I have a thick enough and completely flat surface. Overall I think it went relatively well but my edges surrounding my lettering could have been cleaner.
Face
Plan:
-
Make a face shape with a flat bottom using about a lemon-sized ball of clay
-
Carve the face, starting with the nose and eye sockets, then work way to carving out the mouth and chin
-
Add eyeballs to eyesockets and hair texture using a scoring tool to the forehead and eyebrows
-
Carve out the back of the face so it is hollow and add a hook to hang
-
Smooth out the rest of the face so there are no bumps
-
Fire!
-
Using glaze paint the face(purple and pink)
-
Do two coats!
-
Fire again!

Something that went well in making my face was making the eyes and nose on my face. I was very proud of how it looked like the painting "The Scream". However, something that I could have worked on more was the mouth. I feel it could have had more defining features to give the face as a whole more emotion. The glazing was also something I could have improved on to make it look less spotty. If I were to do this again I would spend more time making the facial features cleaner and have more emotion.
Painted Pendant
Plan:
-
Carve out a circular pendant about the size of a quarter
-
Make a small circle
-
Score and slip a circle in the middle
-
Roll out 8 petals to score and slip around the circle
-
Cut the pendant down to look more even
-
Using underglaze paint the petals purple, the middle yellow, and the spaces between the petals
-
Fire!
-
Glaze using a clear gloss glaze
-
Fire again!

Something that went well was painting the pieces using underglaze. I liked the color combinations I used and how they turned out after firing it. Something that I could have worked on more would be crafting the base of the pendant to be more even and thicker. The pendant turned out slightly warped and very thin which could cause it to break more easily. Also, the petals were quite uneven which made the pendant look lopsided. Next time instead of scoring and slipping a flower on I will paint it completely with underglaze. If I were to do this again I would make sure to make the pendant thick enough and even on all sides.
